Before we dive into our collection, let’s take a fun detour and explore how cats have made their mark in Japanese culture.

Japan and Cats 🗾😽
If you take a closer look at Japan’s cultural history, you’ll find cats woven throughout its folklore, traditions, and even its sacred sites. From the mythical creatures like the Bakeneko (化け猫) that are featured in many Japanese manga and anime, the popular novel I am a Cat by famous author Natsume Soseki, to temples dedicated specifically to the Maneki-Neko (beckoning cat or lucky cat), these beloved animals have left a lasting mark on Japanese culture. Let us dive a little bit deeper into the popular symbol of the Maneki-Neko and the meaning behind it.
Gotokuji Temple and Maneki Neko
One of the most famous cats in Japan’s history is the Maneki-Neko (beckoning cat), believed to have originated in Tokyo during the Edo Period. Its history is closely tied to Gotokuji Temple, often referred to as the "birthplace" of the Maneki-Neko. According to legend, a feudal lord named Ii Naotaka was passing by the temple when he noticed a cat beckoning him inside. Some say that following the cat saved him from a sudden thunderstorm. Grateful for this stroke of luck, Ii Naotaka made generous donations to the temple, and over time, the beckoning cat became a symbol of good fortune. Today, Gotokuji Temple remains a popular destination, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to admire its countless Maneki-Neko statues.

Maneki Neko: Beckoning Hand 🐾
There are three different types of Maneki-Neko, each distinguished by which paw is raised. A raised right paw is believed to attract wealth and prosperity, making it a popular choice for homes. On the other hand (pun intended), a raised left paw is said to draw in customers, making it ideal for businesses like shops and restaurants. Some Maneki-neko even raises both paws, symbolizing protection and happiness, while also inviting both fortune and visitors into the home.
At Shibuya Stationery, we carry the Maneki Neko Action Pen by funbox featuring a raised right paw—perfect for beckoning good fortune towards you wherever you go!
Maneki Neko: Color and Symbolism 😺
It is said that the colors of Maneki-Neko also carry different symbolic meanings. Here are a few common colors and what they represent:
⚪White Cat: General good luck and happiness.
⚫ Black Cat: Wards off evil and protects.
🟡Gold/Yellow Cat: Wealth, prosperity, and financial success.
🔴Red Cat: Good health, longevity, and protection from illness.
🩷Pink Cat: Love and relationships.
🟢Green Cat: Prosperity in academia.
🔵Blue Cat: Wisdom and success.
⚫🟤⚪Calico Cat: Symbolizing good luck.
Maneki Neko: Cat Accessories 🐈
When you come across a Maneki-Neko, you may notice that, in addition to their colors, they also wear various accessories—each carrying its own symbolic meaning. Here are some common accessories and what they represent.
Collar with bell: During the Edo period, it would signify that the cat had a wealthy or noble owner.
Bib: Symbol of protection; reminiscent of the jizo statues.
Gold coin: Wealth
Carp fish: Strength and bountiful catch and wealth.
Ball: Wisdom and money.
Empty Sake Barrel: Brings good luck and wards off evil.
Daikon Radish: Wealth and good luck.
