The Kuru Toga is distinguished by its innovative lead rotation system that rotates the pencil lead while writing. This mechanism, driven by a spring-loaded clutch, turns the lead slightly each time the pencil is lifted from the paper. This feature guarantees an even wear of the lead, resulting in a conical tip shape that delivers a consistent, fine line.

The Kuru Toga Advance model introduces a new "W Speed" mechanism that doubles the rotation speed of the lead compared to standard Kuru Toga pencils, enabling faster sharpening. While traditional Kuru Toga pencils rotate the lead every 40 strokes, the Advance model rotates the lead every 20 strokes. The Advance model incorporates metal components in its mechanism for smoother and more reliable performance.

Additionally, the Advance model is equipped with a sliding lead sleeve that shields the lead during writing. As the lead shortens, the sleeve retracts into the pencil, allowing continuous writing without the need to extend more lead until the sleeve becomes too short. When not in use, the sleeve can be fully retracted to prevent damage to the pencil.
