Which is it: Gacha, Gachapon or Gashapon? Japan's Capsule Toy Machine

a side image of the Japanese gacha / gachapon machine

Some say gacha, gachapon, gashapon or simply capsule toys. Whatever you call them, these little mystery toys are capturing the attention of not only Japan but the world. While these machines are scattered throughout every corner of Japan, some people may still be unfamiliar with them. As self-proclaimed gachapon enthusiasts, our team at Shibuya Stationery Store is excited to share more about these charming little toys that we’re proud to feature in our shop.

Gachapon is Japan’s version of a coin-operated capsule vending machine, typically containing items like keychains, mini plushies, mini figurines, and buildable figures, etc. all inside a plastic capsule. Many of these items are collectibles, featuring popular anime and manga characters, video game icons, well-known brands, miniature food items, and much more. The item you receive is always a random selection from the featured collection. You can often find these iconic machines in nearly every nook and cranny across Japan. In train stations, in some airports, in shopping alleys, inside shops, in random streets, and there are even some stores dedicated specifically to carrying gachapon machines, such as #C-pla.

Which is the correct name for it? Gacha? Gachapon? or Gashapon?

If you've ever used a Japanese capsule toy machine, you know the thrill of inserting coins and turning the center dial to release the capsule inside. The term 'gacha' actually comes from the onomatopoeic sound of the capsule tumbling out of the machine as the dial is turned. While the word 'pon' is also an onomatopoeic sound used in Japanese to indicate something appearing with a pop!

The word gacha, gacha-gacha, the longer version of gachapon or even the officially Bandai trademarked gashapon is an acceptable way to refer to this well loved capsule toy machine.

Why are gacha machines so popular? 💚

There are several reasons why these machines are incredibly popular among tourists and locals a like. You can find them in nearly every corner of Shibuya (where we are based), and these are some fun reasons why we think they're so well loved.

  1. Unexpected surprise 😮

The thrill of not knowing what surprise awaits is a big part of the gacha machine’s charm. As the toy tumbles out, you can’t help but cross your fingers in anticipation, wondering which one from the collection you’ll get. You might feel a surge of excitement when you get the toy you were hoping for, but there’s also the chance of disappointment if a less-desired one tumbles out instead.

  2. Miniature version of everyday life 🤏

There are varieties of gacha toy options that are available in the market. Recently, one of the most ubiquitous kind you can find is a miniature of everyday Japanese products. From miniature versions of adorable desserts, Japanese soba store, old fashion candy shop, supermarket bento boxes, even public bath house items, these collectibles offer a unique way to celebrate the things you love while sharing your passions with the world.

  3. They make great souvenir 🎁

For those visiting Japan, there seems to be a popular conundrum of not having enough space in your luggage for all of your new purchases. After stocking up on new clothes and shoes from your favorite Japanese brands—along with must-have Japanese stationery—do you still have room for souvenirs to bring home for your loved ones or to reminisce about the trip?

The tiny capsule toys seem to be the answer to all your problems. With their reasonable price point, palm-sized convenience, and incredible variety, there's always a toy that will bring joy to everyone

  4. Variety of toys available 🎠🎏🎐

Do not let the word 'capsule toy' fool you into thinking that these are just made for kids. The next time you come across these machines, give it a glance, you might be surprised that it piques your interests. Recently, we've noticed a surge in unique and fun products appearing in gacha machines. Some of our team members have discovered mini plant growing kits, complete with seeds, pots, and even soil! Another exciting find was train and bus-themed keychains that play announcement sounds at the press of a button—a perfect souvenir to help you relive your memories of Japan.

Some FAQ's related to gacha! 🤔❓

During our time researching this blog, there are some interesting frequently asked questions that we came across and we will be answering some of these questions below.

  1. How does gachapon machines work?

Most capsule toy machines you’ll find all over Japan are simple to use. Just insert the correct amount of coins based on the price displayed (since the machines don’t give change, be sure to use exact amounts, usually with 100 yen coins). To release the capsule, turn the large dial in the center until you hear a tumbling sound and the dial stops. At that point, a round capsule will have dropped into the opening slot, ready for you to grab!

  2. Are gacha machines gambling?

From our research, people do not consider gacha machines the same as traditional gambling. Purchasing from a capsule machine is nearly identical to purchasing a blind box toy such as Sonny Angels and the very popular Labubu toys. You will receive one variety of the items that are listed in the selection.

  3. Why are capsule toy's so expensive? And are they worth it?

To answer this question we will be strictly speaking from our experience as locals who live in Japan. The toys inside are very good quality, the miniature daily products are beautifully made and look nearly identical to its real life counterparts. Our staff notices that gacha toys that feature tv shows or anime or brand franchises tend to be on a higher price point. So whether or not the price points are expensive and it's worth it, it really depends on each individual's take.
